I’ve gotten into a Hwayuki slump and this made me think of Brilliant Legacy. Re-watching this 2009 drama made me marvel and curious about the changes of filming locations over the years. So I decided to time travel even a bit further to 2002 through watching We Are Dating Now.
And I was lost.
Usually, when watching K-Dramas, I recognize a lot of places and neighborhoods and ‘find my way around’ K-Dramaland. I feel a geographic familiarity with what is onscreen. Not so with We Are Dating.
The café and restaurant landscape is totally different from the current landscape; from the places to the interiors. But also specific types of locations are a lot more frequented than nowadays as, for example, subway stations. And in general, I just don’t have any references for most of the places shown. Another main difference is certainly the camera angles. Most situations are filmed as close-ups (and I mean close-ups!). Rarely the wider (architectural) landscape comes into the frame. So it becomes even harder to get an idea of the place itself.
All in all, I’m curious to find out more about older K-Dramaland and its locations. So you will definitely see a couple of older K-Dramas listed in the locations from now on.

This architectural beauty could be even more often on my screen: House of Open Books
Such a surprise! I thought The Forest Garden [숲속정원] was a very recent staple. And then the building appeared in Brilliant Legacy. Of course (?), the café didn’t exist in 2009. But the place is the same.
Also, if you are in Hongdae, you might want to pass by this café. It’s a rather new staple but quite often on our screens lately: colline [콜린]
