Wondae-ri White Birch Forest [원대리 자작나무숲 or 속삭이는자작나무숲] is a mountain forest located in the village of Wonae [Wondae-ri/원대리] in the Inje County’s Inje Township [Inje-eup/인제읍]. The forest, which opened to the public in 2012, is made up of 690,000 birch trees planted from 1975 to 1995, and is considered to be one of the top 100 tourist attractions in South Korea. It also received the 2017 ‘Excellence Award’ at the ’17th Beautiful Forest National Convention’ (17회 아름다운 숲 전국대회) hosted by the Korea Forest Service. In 2019 alone, it saw a visitorship of 434,000 — hence, note that it could be rather crowded on occasion.

There are also various hiking courses here, such as the ‘Healing Trail’ (1.5 kilometers) , ‘Danger Course’ (3 kilometers), ‘Exploration Course’ (1.2 kilometers) or ‘Short Course’ (1 kilometer), that allow visitors to discover this forest, with the shortest one taking just 30 minutes.

Please note that the forest is located on a mountain slope that is 3.2 km away from the parking lot, and it takes about 50 min. to 1 hour 20 min. on foot from the Information Center to be amidst the birch trees. This is one reason why adapted equipment is needed for a visit especially in winter, as the trails can become quite slippery when the ground freezes.

In 2021, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism –announced through the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO)– selected this forest as one of the ‘100 Must-Visit Spots in Korea’ for 2021-2022.
