Koo Chan-sung (Yeo Jin-goo) adjourns to this market to look for a pharmacy in episode 5 of Hotel Del Luna (호텔 델루나) (tvN, 2019). He starts from the Main Entrance and directs himself towards Gate 2 (seen in the background).
Yoon Pil-joo (Yoon Kye-sang) comes to this market –starting at the main gate– in episode 15 of The Greatest Love/Best Love (최고의 사랑) (MBC, 2011) to buy herbals for his clinic. He runs into Gu Ae-jung (Gong Hyo-jin) here and observers her filming an episode of her new show ‘Searching for Tastes’ as Mat Jang Gum.
Seoul Yangnyeong Market [서울약령시장 or short 약령시장] or with its full name ‘Seoul Yangnyeong Medicine Market’ is nowadays one of the largest herbal medicine markets in South Korea. Ginseng, divers sorts of mushrooms, cactus fruits, corn oil, mulberry roots, but also frogs, terrapins and freshwater shrimp –used as remedies– can be bought at this market.
This market history finds its origin in the official medicine markets, usually called Yangnyeongsi (藥令市/약령시), that emerged during the Joseon times. A Yangnyeongsi with a close-by Bojewon — a Joseon times medical relief center– was already in place at today’s location. It was closed at the end of the Japanese rule and reopened at the end of the 1960s. In 20005, the market zone has been designated as ‘Yangnyeong Market — The specialized industry district for herb medicine.’
The market is located in Seoul’s neighborhood Jegi [Jegi-dong/제기동] in the Dongdaemun District [Dongdaemun-gu/동대문구].
