Hanjujeongsa Pavilion [한주정사/寒洲精舍]
This is seen as the palace maids’ quarters in The King’s Affection/Yeonmo (연모) (KBS2, 2021), as seen in episode 1/2 when young Jung Ji-un (Ko Woo-rim) searches for young Dam-i (Choi Myung-bin) and discovers a wooden door that leads to this place.
Seongju Hangae Village [성주한개마을] is a cultural heritage folk village that has been in existence since the 15th century, and continues to remain inhabited till today.
The village was pioneered by Lee U (이우), who was then the Magistrate of Jinju during King Sejong’s reign (1418-1450), and has since “developed into a historic community of the Seongsan Yi Clan“. It was named ‘Hangae’ (with ‘han’ meaning ‘big’, and ‘gae’ meaning ‘creek/stream’) as Baekcheon Stream [백천] flows from west to east in front of the village.
Along with being designated a National Folklore Cultural Heritage in 2007, 10 of its buildings – built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries – are also designated as cultural assets of Gyeongsang Province.
Hanjujeongsa Pavilion/Hanju Pavilion [한주정사/寒洲精舍] is located at the top of Hangae Village. In the past, it was used as a space for male residents to receive and socialize with guests. The pavilion has two bedrooms, Daecheongmaru [대청마루] and Numaru [누마루].
The village compound is located in the village Daesan [Daesan-ri/대산리] in Seongju County’s [Seongju-gun/성주군] Wolhang Township [Wolhang-myeon/월항면] — close to 4 hours south-east of Seoul by car, or 5 hours by public transport.
