Ojukheon Grounds [오죽헌 경내] is the birthplace of calligrapher, writer, poet, and artist Shin Saimdang (사임당 신씨, 申師任堂) (1504–1551), located in Gangneung’s neighborhood Jukheon [Jukheon-dong/죽헌동]. Shin Saimdang also gave birth at this place to prominent confucian scholar Yi I (이이/李珥) (1536-1586), who wrote under the penname Yulgok (율곡) and appears on the 5,000 won note.
The complex, which is known for its abundance of black bamboo (where its name also comes from), houses the Ojukheon House [오죽헌] and the Ojukheon Municipal Museum [오죽헌시립박물관]; hence it’s also known as Ojukheon & Municipal Museum [오죽헌/시립박물관]. Ojukheon House is one of the oldest remaining Korean wooden buildings and has therefore been designated Korean National Cultural Heritage No. 165.
