Mulgogi [물고기]

Through The Darkness (2022); Memorials (2020)

After interrogating Gu Yong-chun (Han Jun-woo) at the penitentiary, Song Ha-young (Kim Nam-gil) and Kook Young-soo (Jin Sun-kyu) have a drink here to decompress in episode 8 of Through The Darkness/Those Who Read Hearts of Evil (악의 마음을 읽는 자들) (SBS, 2022).

Koo Se-ra (Im Jin-a/Nana from After School) and Seo Gong-myung (Park Sung-hoon) are regulars at this restaurant in Memorials/Into the Ring /The Ballot (출사표) (KBS2, 2020). They first come here (separately) in episode 4, are back here in episodes 6, 7 and 9. In episode 10, Se-ra and Gong-myung return to discuss the Sarang-dong name change campaign over a meal. When he asks her what on the menu she’d like to have, her flirty answer was “I like you,” much to Gong’s secret amusement.

Mulgogi [물고기] —which means ‘fish’ in Korean— is a Japanese izakaya/restaurant that specializes in sashimi and seafood. It is located in Incheon’s neighborhood Nae-dong [내동] —administered by the neighborhood Dongincheon [Dongincheon-dong/동인천동]— in the Jung District [Jung-gu/중구 ], about a 4-min. walk to/from Cafe Timely (seen in Encounter).

The poem written in red on the restaurant’s window is apparently in Jeolla dialect, according to this blogpost, with an interpretation from here being how it’s about a mother who feels sorry for not being able to educate her children well enough.
