Jumunjin Lighthouse [주문진등대] is the oldest lighthouse in Gangwon-do located in the village of Jumun [Jumun-ri/주문리] in Gangneung’s Jumunjin Township [Jumunjin-eup/주문진읍]. The 40-meter (130ft) tall lighthouse was built in ‘Japanese style’ in 1917 –with carved cherry blossoms and a triangular gable on top of the entrance– for guiding steamers that were running between Busan and Wonsan at the time. It still carries the bullet marks from the Korean War and the parts that were destroyed during this time were restored in 1951. The lighthouse comes with an observatory deck that allows splendid views of the nearby Jumunjin Port and the East Sea. Various sculptures are also placed around the lighthouse.
