Hyowon Park [효원공원], built in 1994, is a public park located in Suwon’s neighborhood Ingye [Ingye-dong/인계동] in the Paldal District [Paldal-gu/팔달구]. The park sits in walking distance to/from Cafe Bluehip [카페블루힙]. The Gyeonggi Cultural Center [경기도 문화의 전당], with its outdoor theater [경기아트센터 야외극장], is also located here.
The park centers on the concept of hyo or filial piety (효/孝) and aims to “awaken the feelings of filial piety in growing children“. This is why various statues based on this theme can be found around the park.
Wolhwawon Garden [월화원], located at the park’s north-western point, is probably its best known attraction. This garden, which was opened to the public in April 2006, was modeled after traditional Chinese private gardens from China’s Guangdong Province based on a 2003 ‘memorandum of agreement’ that was established to strengthen the friendship between the provincial governments of Gyeonggi-do and Chinese Guangdong [广东省]. One feature occasionally seen at such traditional gardens is, for instance, round windows or doors, also known as moon windows or moon gates.
