Hangang Bridge/Han River Bridge [한강대교/漢江大橋] is the first bridge that was built to cross Hangang/Han River. Completed in October 1917, its 100th anniversary was celebrated in October 2017. If people walk over this bridge in K-Dramaland, it is usually on the southern part underneath the artificial island. Crossing this bridge on foot might be reminiscent of the first version of this bridge, which was as ‘pedestrian bridge’ —called Hangang Indogyo/Hangang Footbridge (한강 인도교)— mainly used by people and carriages. “Along both edges there were pedestrian paths and in the center was a lane for small carts, oxen and ponies.” writes and continues Robert Neff for the KoreaTimes: “It was a symbol of modernity ― a step into the future ― but it also became a popular site for people to commit suicide.” Suicides became so common that police guareded the brige and signe in Korean and Japanese were erected that read “Endure just a little more!”.
In July 1925, a great flood heavily damaged the bridge and with increasing traffic, the bridge was rebuilt in 1937 and tram tracks were added. In 1950, during the Korean War, the bridge was partly destroyed through bombing by the government to avoid North Korean troops to enter Seoul. During the bombing, 500 and 1,000 people (mostly civilians) were killed because it was not informed about the bombing beforehand. The bridge was restored only in 1954.

Later, in 1982, an identical twin bridge was built right next to the bridge ad the bridge was re-named to its current name, Hangang Bridge. Today, signs incorporated on the ground on the Southern pedestrian entry of the bridge and on Nolseom serve as reminders of the original place of the footbridge. The northern part has no upper metal structure.

Like Mapo Bridge [마포대교], there were also positive quotes placed along this bridge in 2013 as part of a ‘Bridge of Life‘ campaign, in an attempt to lower suicide rates. (Note: If you are in distress and require a listening ear, please find a hotline on this international resource list. — Mich KDL) By July 2020, the quotes that were written by the late Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon along with soprano Sumi Jo, actor Ha Jung-woo and singer Lee Hyo-ri were removed “after civil complaints were filed about the uncomfortable truth that the late mayor who wrote the suicide prevention message killed himself,” as stated on Korea Bizwire. This might be the reason why they do not appear in When My Love Blooms.

Hangang Bridge is located in Seoul’s neighborhood Ichon [Ichon-dong/이촌동] in the Yongsan District [Yongsan-gu/용산구], passing directly over Nodeulseom [노들섬].

  1. Changed

When I got there it didn’t look at all like in the pictures and I was told that the bridge has been changed, 🙁

    1. That’s a pity to hear! Would you mind to share what exactly has changed?

  2. Question

Hi there, I so love this site. 🙂 just wanna know if it is allowed to stop at this bridge to take a photo? 🙂

    1. Hi Bev, there should be no problem to stop on Hangang Bridge to take photos. Of course, only if you stay on the footpath (otherwise you will be putting yourself in danger).
If you would like to make totally sure, I suggest to go to a Tourist Information Center and ask.

  3. Suggest

This is also in Last Minute Romance. 🙂

    1. Many thanks for pointing this out! I have now added the drama to the description above. Do you still remember in which episode the bridge was shown and what happened?

  4. The Liar and His Lover

Wasn’t this also featured in The Liar and His Lover? Soorim chased Han Gyeol after the Mushc&Co debut showcase and then Hang Gyeol confessed to her that he likes her on this bridge.

    1. Hi! You’re so right. For once something positive happens on this bridge :). I just added your description to the “main section”! Many thanks.
