The Garden of Morning Calm [아침고요수목원] is a private botanic garden created by Han San-kyung (한상경) in 1996 when he was professor of horticulture at Sahmyook University [삼육대학교]. The design of the garden is based on curves and asymmetric balances. The inspiration for its name stems from the short poem “Lamp of the East” written in 1929 by Bengalian artist and poet Rabindranath Tagore –the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature–, which is understood as one of the possible origins for South Korea’s moniker “Land of the Morning Calm”. In 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism –announced through the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO)– selected the Garden of Morning Calm as one of the ‘100 Must-Visit Spots in Korea’ for 2019-2020. and takes up place 48 in CNN’s 2019 list of 50 beautiful places to visit in South Korea.
The garden is located in the village of Imcho [Imcho-ri/임초리] in the Sang Township [Sang-myeon/상면] of the Gapyeong County [Gapyeong-gun/가평군]; about two hours east from Seoul.
Please note when visiting: As Toni informs us (many thanks!), most of the dramas were filmed at ‘Pond Garden’. The small bridge can be only seen from afar as it is not open to the public.
