Perfume (2019); Your House Helper (2018); Jugglers (2017-18); I'm Not A Robot (2017-18); Black (2017); School 2017 (2017); Moonlight Drawn by the Clouds (2016); Mary Stayed Out All Night (2010); You’re Beautiful (2009); Smile Again, Dong Hae (2010); A Love To Kill (2005)

This garden appears in the various dream sequences in Perfume/Peopyoom (퍼퓸) (KBS2, 2019). In episode 1, Min Jae-hee (Ha Jae-suk) sees herself in a beautiful, peaceful garden, after applying the mysterious perfume on her body. Not long after, everything turns dark and Jae-hee collapses to the ground. In episode 5, she thinks back to when her husband told her that he’ll never look at another woman. In episode 7, Seo Yi-do (Shin Sung-rok) dreams that he dances in a garden with Jae-hee.

Kim JiwWoon (Ha Seok-jin) meets up with Im Da-young (Bona of WJSN) come here on their first date in episode 28 of Your House Helper (당신의 하우스헬퍼) (KBS2, 2018) and she introduces him to her father who is buried here.

Nam Chi-won (Choi Daniel) and Jwa Yun-i (Baek Jin-hee) take a walk here in the last scene of final episode 16 of Jugglers (저글러스) (KBS2, 2017-2018).

Sun-hye (Lee Min-ji) teaches Kim Min-kyu (Yoo Seung-ho) ideas about dating — especially when to know the ‘right’ moment for kissing — in this garden, in episode 12 of I’m Not A Robot (로봇이 아니야) (MBC, 2017-18). Sun-hye decides for Aji3/Jo Ji-ah (Chae Soo-bin) to be the guinea pig to teach Min-kyu when the right moment comes along.

This is where the old version of Kang Ha-Ram (Go Ara) died while sitting on a bench and holding Joon’s bracelet in episode 18 of Black (블랙) (OCN, 2017). Later on, her soul goes out of her body and sees Grim Reaper No.444/Black (Kim Tae-Woo) waiting for her, asking her if she has lived a happy life and telling her that he is there to get her. This happens close to the J Garden Cottage [J의 오두막 정원].

It is here where Hyun Tae-Woon’s (Kim Jung-Hyun) mother is buried and he brings his just-girlfriend Ra Eun-Ho (Kim Se-Jeong) here on their date in episode 13 of School 2017 (학교 2017) (KBS2, 2017). His father had decided that he’d only visit his mother when he is happy and today he is.

In Moonlight Drawn By Clouds/Love in the Moonlight (구르미 그린 달빛) (KBS2, 2016) this garden is part of the royal palace. In episode 1, Lee Young (Park Bo-Gum) intercepts a love letter to his sister Princess Myungeun here who is happily eating close to him. And in episode 3 Hong Ra-On (Kim You-Jung) is gardening here with Princess Youngeun (Heo Jung-Eun). Lee Young comes along and Ra-on and him bicker for a while until she addresses him “as a friend”.

Jung in (Kim Jae-Wook) takes Mei-ri/Mary (Moon Geun-Young) to this arboretum (because she said she likes these places) in episode 8 of Mary Stayed Out All Night/Marry Me, Mary! (메리는외박중) (KBS2, 2010). He remembers how Mei-Ri got her scar and the meaning of the japanese phrase “Boku ga iru.”

Also seen in You’re Beautiful (미남이시네요) (SBS, 2009); Smile Again, Dong Hae (웃어라 동해야) (KBS1, 2010-11); A Love To Kill/Knock Out by Love /This Love I Want to Kill /Detestable Love (이 죽일 놈의 사랑) (KBS2, 2005).

The Garden of Morning Calm [아침고요수목원] is a private botanic garden created by Han San-kyung (한상경) in 1996 when he was professor of horticulture at Sahmyook University [삼육대학교]. The design of the garden is based on curves and asymmetric balances. The inspiration for its name stems from the short poem “Lamp of the East” written in 1929 by Bengalian artist and poet Rabindranath Tagore –the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature–, which is understood as one of the possible origins for South Korea’s moniker “Land of the Morning Calm”.

The garden is located in the village of Imcho [Imcho-ri/임초리] in the Sang Township [Sang-myeon/상면] of the Gapyeong County [Gapyeong-gun/가평군]; about two hours east from Seoul.

Please note when visiting: As Toni informs us (many thanks!), most of the dramas were filmed at ‘Pond Garden’. The small bridge can be only seen from afar as it is not open to the public.

  1. A really beautiful place! I went here primarily because it was a filming location for Moonlight Drawn by Clouds but I left feeling happier because the whole place really looks like a painting. Anyway, we went there as part of a tour group which means that we were only given limited time to roam around the huge garden. It was a mistake of ours to walk idly and go to the filming location last that’s why when we remembered that we had only like 10 minutes before departure, we had to run and quickly look for it and it was quite far from the main entrance (from what I can remember). So, if you’re main purpose of going here is for the filming location, go to Pond Garden (the name of this location) first then go see the other parts of the garden after. Also, that small bridge where Lee Yeong stood is not open to the public; you can only take a photo with it from afar. You’ll also know it’s the filming location because there are tarps with Moonlight Drawn by Clouds photos. 🙂
