Choeundang [초은당/招隱堂]

My Unfamiliar Family (2020)

Kim Eun-hee (Han Ye-ri) and colleague Seo Kyeong-ok (Ga Deuk-hi) visit this hanok to meet one of their author clients in episode 1 of My Unfamiliar Family ([아는 건 별로 없지만] 가족입니다) (tvN, 2020). In the same episode, she returns here and joins the author’s meditation session. As Eun-hee closes her eyes, she recalls the longest day of her life: March 10, 2016. After the session, she is surprised to see her brother Kim Ji-woo (Shin Jae-ha) and her estranged best friend Park Chan-hyuk (Kim Ji-suk) behind the camera. Eun-hee tries to run away to avoid Chan-hyuk but fails when she is spotted by Ji-woo. Eun-hee and Chan-hyuk stand awkwardly at first but then he invites her to grab dinner.

CF Filmed Here

This hanok is also the filming location of a 2013 SK Telecom CF for their LTE-A Campaign Season 2 called ‘Monk (스님)‘ (30″ Version) featuring Ha Jung-woo.

Choeundang/Cho Eun-dang [초은당/招隱堂], or Choeundang Cultural Place [문화공간 초은당] in full, is a former private hanok bought by Kwon Oh-chun in 2004 and transformed into a cultural space “where nature, tea and people interact” in. This place’s name translates to ‘house to invite a lost person’.

Opened on June 8, 2013 after serving as Kwon’s private residence, it is now run by Kwon’s daughter and open to the public (through reservations — see below) for special occasions like art performances, humanities lectures, social gatherings, and weddings.

The hanok was designed by master craftsman Choi Ki-young, who’s considered as the 2019 National Intangible Cultural Property No. 74; and the laquer was done by lacquerware master Jeong Su-hwa, the 11th Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 113. It is located on a hill overlooking the Bukhan River in the village of Muno [Muno-ri/문호리] in Yangpyeong County’s Seojong Township [Seojong-myeon/서종면].

Please note that this venue operates on reservation system for a limited number of people per day and it is thus necessary to contact them before visiting.
