Cheonggyecheon Stream or Cheonggyecheon [청계천], officiated in 2005, is a 10.84km (6.8 mi) long waterway that flows through downtown Seoul —in the neighrborhood of Jongno-18.104.22.168 ga-dong/Jongno 1(il).2(i).3(sam).4(sa) [종로22.214.171.124가동]— forming the Southern border of the Jongno District [Jongno-gu/종로구], formerly covered by a highway. According to Claudia Chow (article in Portuguese), the water that flows in this channel comes from the Han River, “and 120,000 tons of water are pumped non-stop daily.”
Mojeon Bridge/Mojeongyo [모전교] and Gwangtong Bridge/Gwangtonggyo [광통교] make up part of the major 22 bridges that cross this waterway, and are the first two from west of the stream. At the southern end of Cheonggye Stream’s Jangtong Bridge, a part of the Berlin Wall was installed at a place now called ‘Berlin Square’ in 2005. It was a as a symbolic gesture wishing peace and reunification of the Koreas.
This site was selected in 2012 as one of 100 regular filming locations for movies and dramas by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Film Council, and featured in the brochure The Places In Seoul Cinema Fell in Love With (영화가 사랑한 서울 촬영지 100선).
