Changshin Quarry Viewing Gallery [창신동 채석장 전망대]
After all misunderstandings cleared, Hong Dae-young (Lee Do-hyun) –in his teenager version– and Jung Da-Jung (Kim Ha-neul) share a kiss at this place in episode 14 of 18 Again (18 어게인) (JTBC, 2020).
Changshin Quarry Viewing Gallery [창신동 채석장 전망대] also known as Changsin Soongin Quarry Observatory [창신 숭인 채석장 전망대], is an observation platform with a café which opened in 2020 in Seoul’s neighborhood Changsin [Changsin-dong/창신동] in the Jongno District [Jongno-gu/종로구].
Until the 1960s, the area where the platform is located served as a main quarry for the city of Seoul and some of its major buildings like the Central Station — now Culture Station Seoul 284 [문화역서울284] –, Seoul City Hall [서울특별시 청사], and the National Bank [한국은행 본관] — now the Bank of Korea Money Museum [한국은행 화폐박물관] — were built from the stones of the quarry. Um Dongsub from Jo Jinman Architects [조진만 건축사사무소] designed this new platform and construction spans over two phases (period 1: 2017-2020 and period 2: 2022).
The platform also houses Café Camel at the Observatory [전망대 위 카페낙타], a “healing cafe in the city overlooking the city of Seoul”.
