Abel Bookstore [아벨서점]

Let Me Be Your Knight (2021-22)

This is Seo Woo-yeon’s (Jang Dong-joo) retreat (appearing as bookstore ‘Sosimdang’) in Let Me Be Your Knight/I’ll Be Your Night (너의 밤이 되어줄게) (SBS, 2021-22). While he is here reading in episode 2, In Yoon-joo (Jung In-sun) momentarily steps into this store to seek shelter from the rain. While looking through the books, she thinks out loud how they remind her of her father; a thought that directly resonates with Woo-yeon. But before he can strike up a conservation, she already heads out of the store.

Abel Bookstore [아벨서점], run by owner Kwak Hyun-sook for more than 30 years, is located at the Incheon Baedari Secondhand Bookstore Street/Baedari Bookstore Alley [인천배다리헌책방거리] in Incheon’s neighborhood Geumgok [Geumgok-dong/금곡동] —part of its administrative neighborhood Geumchang [Geumchang-dong/금창동]— in the Dong District [Dong-gu/동구]; just two doors away from Bookstore BookNStory [한미 서점] and a short walk to/from Daeho Stationery Corporation [대호문구상사].

Abel Bookstore is one of the six remaining used bookstores —together with Jiphyeonjeon (est. 1951), Daechangseorim, Nabinalda Bookstore, Hanmi Bookstore and Samsung Bookstore— among the more than 40 that opened in this area in the 1950s. This part of the town was called ‘Baedari [배다리]’ and was part of Incheon’s old city center.

The bookstore is also the subject of the documentary film Space Baedari (숨은지혜찾기) (2020). The short movie (42 mins.) documents the residents’ fight from 2007 against the construction of an industrial road that was to run through Baedari Village. After holding it off, the city authorities resumed their work on the road in 2019, which created new friction between residents and the city government.
